Spaying and neutering your own animals is the most effective strategy to reduce the number of animals in shelters.

Full-Service Pet Wellness Care

Customized pet spay and neuter surgery

At Noble West Animal Hospital, we’re well prepared to discuss the best time for spay and neuter surgery for our clients in Noblesville and surrounding areas. Having your female pet spayed and your male pet neutered can bring with it many behavioral and medical benefits. Though, these benefits should be weighed against any drawbacks. Some dog breeds may be more inclined to develop certain cancers and other issues when they’re spayed or neutered too early. Still, spaying or neutering your pet helps curb animal overpopulation. Thousands of homeless pets enter animal shelters every year. By discussing the benefits of pet spay and neuter surgery and letting you know what to expect afterward, we hope to educate our clients to help them make the most informed decision possible.

The Benefits of Having Your Pet Spayed or Neutered

The benefits animals receive from spaying or neutering surgery are some they’re unlikely to receive any other way. There are many medical and behavioral benefits. Males are less likely to engage in mounting behavior, which can not only be worrisome but can result in altercations with other pets. Males and females are less likely to roam outside looking for a mate when they’re spayed or neutered. Other benefits of pet spay and neuter surgery include:

  • The incidence of ovarian and uterine cancer is decreased in females.
  • The likelihood of breast cancer is markedly decreased in females when it’s done before their first heat cycle.
  • The incidence of testicular cancer is eliminated in males.
  • The incidence of prostate problems is decreased in males.
  • Urine spraying and marking behavior are reduced or eliminated in both males and females.

What to Expect After Surgery

We work hard to give our patients the best care possible. We’re preemptive about pain management and will send you home with the appropriate medications and detailed instructions. As your pet comes out of anesthesia, we’ll stay with them and make sure they’re comfortable. When you pick them up, please keep the following in mind about caring for your companion at home:

  • Check their incision site daily and watch for any unusual swelling, redness, or discharge.
  • Refrain from bathing your pet for at least ten days or until its sutures are dissolved or removed.
  • Give your pet a quiet, extra comfortable place to recover for at least 24 hours.
  • Keep your pet relaxed and try to keep them from running and jumping for two weeks.
  • Distract your pet from licking the incision with treats, or use a medical collar.
